The Carnival in Abruzzo

In Abruzzo, a region of agricultural and pastoral traditions and religiosity, the Carnival used to represent shared values and beliefs by celebrating the start of the new year.

The peasant carnivals that once used to liven up the country districts and the squares of villages and towns, have now changed, but in Abruzzo you can still catch the references to the past in today's representations of the Carnival.

We should mention for instance the famous Carnival of Francavilla al Mare (CH) that this year will be held on 15th and 17th February 2015. The protagonists of this celebration are the floats, which are built by the expert papier-mâché masters from the village. The creation of the floats is inspired by the caricature and satire of the people and events that occurred in the previous year. The parade also features the presence of folk groups, marching bands, dancers, as well as local citizens, especially children, wearing costumes.
