Lake of Pantaniello (Barrea AQ)
Natural invaded of morainic origin, elliptical, it is about 150 m long. and 200 m wide. It is located at an altitude of 1818 m., North-east of Monte Greco and is the second largest lake in the Apennines. Since 1972, it is part of the Pantaniello Lake State Natural Reserve. In its waters live the Gammarus Lacustris, a small freshwater crustacean whose origin dates back to the last glaciation. The only fish species is the Tinca. Access to the protected area is not permitted for cars and hunting and fishing are prohibited. You can go hiking, cross-country skiing and mountain biking.
To reach the area, take the S.S. 17 and at the height of the Piano delle Cinquemiglia take the fork for the Montagna Spaccata; after about 5 km of dirt road you reach a clearing where you leave the car and continue on foot. Alternatively, take the S.S. 83 and after the Barrea dam you park your car and go up on foot. The Pantaniello Reserve can only be reached on foot. HERE the trail network of the Abruzzo National Park.
