The way of Campo Imperatore

The horseback ride that starts from the territory of the Province of Teramo, to get to Sulmona, after having crossed the Monti della Laga National Park area, is a challenging route as exciting for the riders who are committed to attack the Gran Sasso massif, which, seen from Castelli, will show all its grandeur, and then he will pass in Vado di Siella, finding under them the breathtaking view of Campo Imperatore, a lunar landscape that exerts a strong fascination on the traveler. The towns touched by the trek are all of ancient origins and preserve monuments worthy of being visited.
Montorio, Tossicia, Isola Del Gran Sasso, surrounded by woods and pastures and rich in medieval testimonies such as the church of San Giovanni ad Insulam dating back to the twelfth century, Castelli, at the foot of Monte Camicia, a small jewel set in the wild and beautiful surrounding nature and famous for being the cradle of a refined school in the production of artistic ceramics, whose roots sink in the early Middle Ages when a community of Benedictines founded the abbey of San Salvatore, beginning the production of ceramics.
Once you reach the plateau of Campo Imperatore, which is still today a grazing place for flocks and herds that once married through the tracks to reach the Tavoliere delle Puglie, you meet the villages of Castel del Monte, with its Ricetto, the Rocca di Calascio, with its medieval castle, and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, protected by a Medici tower. Then you will descend to Ofena and you will reach Capestrano, a town known since the IX century.
In addition to the architectural beauties - the Piccolomini castle, the church of San Pietro ad Oratorium dating back to the VII century and modified in the 13th century - Capestrano is famous for the funerary statue of the Capestrano Warrior today preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Chieti.
Going down towards Collepietro, we find the Navelli plateau, famous above all for the cultivation of saffron - Crocus Sativus - originating from Asia Minor who found in this corner of Italy its only area of production.
Another place of passage before reaching Sulmona is Corfinio, ancient Corfinium, where stands the Basilica Valvense di San Pelino and finally the city of Sulmona, city of art, of history and rich in important monuments.
