Roseto degli Abruzzi (TE)

Where is: it is a municipality of the Teramo coast, it stretches north of Vomano river estuary. It can be reached through the Highway A14 exit Roseto degli Abruzzi. Its municipality area comes complete with the ancient hilly village of Montepagano from which you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view from the Adriatic Sea to the Gran Sasso d’Italia.

Why visit it: better known as “Lido delle Rose”, this seaside resort is one of the most important tourist centers of the Abruzzo coast, one of the seven pearl of the Teramo “garden coast”, thanks to its wide beaches of soft sand and shallow water, also reachable through a very equipped bike path. This territory gives us many scenic beauties, even if the sea is the main visiting card, the hill represents the perfect place for those who want to discover an unusual look but equally fascinating of Roseto degli Abruzzi. This small town, indeed, was born 135 years ago as an emanation of the medieval village of Montepagano. Going through its cobbles streets, even today are still visible the ancient fortifications traces and the four doors entering the small hilly town added in the list of Authentic Italian Villages.

What to see:

  • Saint Mary of the Assumption Church (former Saint Philomena Church), built in the early ‘900, inside it presents a characteristic terra cotta altar accompanied by the paint “The Holy Family”, a work of Pasquale Celommi, a painter from Roseto;
  • Villa Mazzarosa Devincenzi, a building that dates back to the early 1900s wherein the Senator Giuseppe Devincenzi, politician and agronomist, built his agricultural research laboratory. It is places inside the natural Reserve of Borsacchio. In the wineries is stored the biggest oak barrel of Europe;
  • Natural Reserve of Borsacchio: a protected area of unspoiled beauty characterized by the presence of dunes and stretches of Mediterranean scrub, natural environment of rare birds and destination for open space and wild landscape lovers;
  • Medieval village of Montepagano, going in and out from the old access doors, it deserves a visit the bell tower of the Saint Antimo Church, tied to a legend which ascribed its construction to Pope Sixtus V, and the SS. Annunziata Church of late XVI century wherein is stored a precious altar in polychrome wood with many saints and prophets statues, while into the sacristy is affixed the plaque recalling the birth of Roseto in 1860 by the clergy of the Church;
  • Civic Museum of the Material Culture, placed into the wonderful village of Montepagano.

What to eat: like all seaside municipalities, sea food cuisine rules, but not only. The surrounding valleys and the sheep farming fields they allow the presence of many animals able to offer a lot of certified high quality meat IGP, just like wines and olive oils from vineyards and olive groves of this area, certified with marks DOC and DOP.

It is part of: Italian Authentic Villages about the Montepagano district – Blue Flag 2019 – Green Flag 2020 of Italian pediatricians like a child-friendly beach - Yellow Flag 2020 Fiab (Italian Federation Environment and Bike) as a cycle municipality.
