Rocca di Mezzo

Rocca di Mezzo, at 1329 meters above sea level, 29 km from the capital, located at the north-eastern edge of the Carche plateau of the Rocche, is a climatic summer resort and winter sports center. The municipality, which is part of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park, also includes the villages of Fontavignone, Terranera and Rovere. Built in the Barbarian period as a fortified village, it participated in the foundation of the city of L'Aquila. The town still has some medieval character and interesting monuments. Next to the old town, today a new residential area has been created with villas, residences and hotels, which gives the town the graceful appearance of a small town. The pinewoods and meadows that crown it along with the healthy mountain climate make it a center of healthy holiday. Its unique landscape allows many itineraries for hiking and mountaineering walks. In winter the nearby slopes of the Magnola and Campo Felice offer interesting routes for skiers. There are also some typical feasts for the area: the best known is that of Narcissus, the flower that in May flourishes among the grasses of the plateau.
