In view of the 2,912 meters of Corno Grande, the highest peak of the Gran Sasso and the Apennines, the historic hotel of Campo Imperatore (2,130 meters) is at the center of the highest "domaine skiable" of Abruzzo, which rises with its ski lifts in the direction of 2,233 meters of Mount Scindarella. The high altitude favours excellent snow cover for most of the winter. The Campo Imperatore plateau offers good opportunities for cross-country skiers, while the gullies of the Gran Sasso allow for countless off-piste and ski-touring itineraries. The high altitude favours excellent snow cover for most of the winter. The resort is located in the centre of the Gran Sasso-Laga National Park and is home to the southernmost glacier in Europe, the Calderone. From the town of Assergi, a modern cable car, open all year round, overcoming a difference in height of over 1000 meters, allows you to reach this spectacular plateau. The plateau of Campo Imperatore offers 60 km to cross-country skiers, including the track in the territory of Santo Stefano di Sessanio near Lake Racollo, or the slopes of Castel del Monte, at the eastern end of the vast plain of Campo Imperatore between the Piano di Cretarola and the Fonte Pietrattina and the ring of three lakes that winds at the edge of Campo Imperatore. The gullies of the Gran Sasso allow for countless off-piste and ski-touring itineraries. In addition to skiing, there are natural and artificial rock climbing gyms, sled-dogs, snowshoeing and snowboarding schools.
