Fiume Mavone, Ph. di Patafisik - Opera propria

Descrizione lunga

Mavone river rises from the high peaks and, even though it only runs for 23 kilometres, you can call it His Highness: its homeland lies on the eastern slope of the Corno Grande, at 2912 metres above sea level.
The beauty of the land, which the river runs through, is not to be underestimated. These include the Ortolano Park and the Abbey of San Giovanni ad Insulam, which are in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park

Do you want to touch its royal water? No problem.
A walking path made with eco-friendly materials will take you to its banks, in the extraordinary scenery of the Gran Sasso d'Italia.
You are in Isola del Gran Sasso, in the province of Teramo, in the green area of the Ortolano Park, where a series of green infrastructures for educational and recreational use have been set up near the river. They explain the naturalistic and environmental importance and value of the Mavone, which is a Site of Community Interest. Other informative panels can be found near the Abbey of San Giovanni ad Insulam and on the riverside path in the Pacciano locality.

Along its course there are ancient abbeys, remains of watermills, historic centres and protected areas (Fiume-Fiumetto reserve), and the tiny hamlet of Casale San Nicola, under the impressive wall of Corno Grande with the nearby homonymous hermitage.
So get ready for a short but intense journey, full of history and nature, which ends when the river becomes part of the Vomano River, of which it is the richest perennial water branch.
