Ci troviamo ai margini di Pescasseroli, la “capitale” dell’Alta Valle del Sangro.
The Campotosto Lake is an artificial reservoir obtained from the barrier of the Fucino stream by means of two dams and the consequent flooding of the peatland region between the Gran Sasso and the Monti della Laga. It is located at an altitude of 1313 metres, has a characteristic "V" shape, has an area of 1400 hectares, a perimeter of 42 km and an average depth of 13 m. It is part of the hydroelectric plants of the Vomano Valley. Surrounded by a rich and luxuriant vegetation with meadows and woods that take on a thousand shades of colours, the lake is a destination for tourists and sports enthusiasts of fishing, canoeing, windsurfing and cycling. It is not allowed to go to the lake with motor boats. If you want to take a nice ride in the car you can completely circumnavigate the lake and enjoy the beautiful meadows that surround it and that in summer make it practically a "branch" of the sea. The whole area, due to its landscape and naturalistic value, is protected by a Nature Reserve of the State, included in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The ecosystem of the Reserve is favourable to stop off migratory birds such as the rare and fascinating Grey Heron, the Croccolone (symbol of the Reserve), the Germano Reale and the Svasso Maggiore. Characteristic is the presence of a large number of wild ducks, coots and pochards in the winter months. The fish species currently present in the lake are: the Coregone, the brown trout, the rainbow trout, the Tinca, the Triotto or Rovella, the Barbo.
