Rivisondoli faces from the east, in a dominant position, on the Prato plateau at an average altitude of 1,365 meters above sea level. It is at the center of the "Regione degli Altipiani Maggiore of Abruzzo", in a very suggestive natural environment, among the snowy peaks of the mountains that delimit the two large protected areas of the Abruzzo and Majella National Park. The oldest part, still well preserved, presents a collection of urban structures, with houses close to one another, on a network of original road networks made up of narrow streets and steps that climb up to the top of the village. To the north-west towards the Five Miles Plan, a defensive wall (terraced houses) of the ancient settlement can still be identified. In the historical center there are some valuable architectural emergencies: the baronial palace, with the facing church of S. Anna and the beautiful church of Suffragio, eighteenth century. The resort, renowned for some time for winter sports, is one of the most important ski resort in Abruzzo, gateway to a first class ski area in Italy. The Monte Pratello ski lifts (1390 m - 2056 m), with the automatic coupling cableway, two chair lifts and six ski lifts, serve 35 km of highly developed pistes, some approved for national and international competitions. With Pizzalto and the Aremogna di Roccaraso, the Pratello facilities give life to a carousel of 110 km of perfectly equipped slopes for all the different levels of difficulty.
The resort has excellent hotel accommodation and welcoming environments for ski-boot. During the Christmas holidays Rivisondoli becomes a natural stage for the oldest and most famous "Living Nativity" in Italy (the first edition was realized in 1951); an important event, unique in its kind, with great popular participation. It takes place every year on January 5th at 6.00 pm, in Piè Lucente: a fairytale mountain scenery. The Child Jesus is the last born of the district, the Madonna is chosen with a specific selection; the figure of St. Joseph is represented by a citizen of the country. (CarlaP) Rivisondoli dominates the Alto Piano delle Cinque Miglia and with the nearby Roccaraso it forms the most important ski resort of central Italy in winter. The Major Highlands are easily accessible, and offer many opportunities for after skiing.
