San Giovanni waterfalls - Guardiagrele (CH)
The San Giovanni waterfalls are located on the slope of the Majella National Park, not far from Guardiagrele, one of the “Borghi più belli d’Italia-Most beautiful villages in Italy”. In an evocative and rich in vegetation environment, at an altitude of 975 meters above sea level, the Vesola stream makes two mighty jumps - one of 35 meters and the other one of 15 meters. Here you are the San Giovanni waterfalls. You can reach them following the hiking trail starting from Bocca di Valle, just 5 kms from Guardiagrele. The dirt road starting point is signaled by a signage wooden board. The nature trail is equipped with botanical signs from the local CAI section (Italian alpine club). It runs alongside the Vesola stream, and then continuing to the right on a fairly easy path you pass the "Canneluccia" spring, until you get to the waterfalls. To reach them it takes about 2 hours, with a total elevation gain of about 500 meters. The path runs almost entirely in the woods and it is easy to come across some splendid species of flowers such as Pinguicula, orchid, gentian, to say nothing of squirrels, foxes, wild boars and different species of birds.
