Santo Stefano di Sessanio

Santo Stefano di Sessanio is one of the most renowned historical centers of Abruzzo, a living symbol of recovery of the territory, where the high altitude, the silence and the enchanted aspect of the place give visitors the feeling of being projected out of time. It was a fief of the Medici family of Florence. Santo Stefano di Sessanio is, among the monuments of man, perhaps the most evocative of the entire Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It is a town completely built in white limestone, whose whiteness has been rendered opaque by time. The roofs of the buildings made exclusively with tiles offer a harmonious overview of whoever observes it from the top of the Medici tower. The village is considered among the most beautiful in Abruzzo for its complete environmental values, for its architectural decoration and for its stylistic homogeneity.

It is part of the Club of the most beautiful villages in Italy. With Castel del Monte offers interesting cross-country trails.
Around 13 km away from the historical center the cross-country ski rings wind up to a height of 1573 meters, near the Racollo lake. The town is also famous as a producer of renowned lentils, an important component of the typical local cuisine, based on the use of legumes, flavored with Gran Sasso's aromatic herbs. The lentils of Santo Stefano di Sessanio, always organic, belong to a rare and ancient quality that is cultivated only in the arid high mountain lands between 1200 and 1450 meters. The main features are the dark brown color, the very small size, the rough and striated surface and, above all, the taste that has made them famous throughout Italy, used by the best chefs for traditional dishes or nouvelle cuisine.
