Tortoreto, in the province of Teramo, is a renowned seaside resort, destination of many Italian and foreign tourists who love to spend their holidays on the Adriatic coast. It is characterised by the clean sea with its gently sloping seabed, for the beach of fine golden sand in perfect symbiosis between the sea and the surrounding green hills, for the cycle paths that flank the coast, for the excellent quality of accommodation facilities and for the many cultural and sporting events that every year enliven the summer season. The tourist's offer is enriched by the presence of the ancient village, rich in history, which still preserves rich evidence. It is also worth visiting is the medieval village of Tortoreto Alta which, at 227 metres above sea level, is almost a "terrace" on the Adriatic Sea. The historic centre, with its towers, arches and narrow streets, preserves the walls of a fortified medieval village. The imposing medieval clock tower, built on an ancient stone and brick base, is worth a visit. Among the places of worship, it is worth mentioning the church of Misericordia, which preserves splendid Renaissance frescoes painted by Giacomo Bonfini di Patrignone, almost certainly student of the most famous Perugino, the seventeenth-century church of Sant'Agostino, with altars made in baroque style and the parish church of San Nicola, founded before 1000 and rebuilt in 1534.
