From Fara San Martino to Rivisondoli
The trek is based on the mighty figure of the Majella massif that in the Amaro mountain has the second top of the Apennines. A place still mysterious today chosen in the past as a place of work for the shepherds, a refuge for brigands, places of meditation for anchorites who have built many hermitages on this mountain. Rough places but just for this fascinating. It starts from the natural reserve of Fara San Martino. It is characterized by extensive mountain pine formations, vast beech forests and spontaneous black pine cores. Remarkable is the presence of several herbaceous and shrub species of high scientific and naturalistic value. Environment of fundamental importance for different species of birds; it is frequented by the brown bear and the Apennine wolf. The route passes through Lama dei Peligni, a town located on the slopes of the Majella near the river Aventino and Taranta Peligna. This town developed in ancient times from the fourteenth century thanks to the very flourishing wool market that was used to make the "tarante", heavy blankets with decorative patterns of various colors. Nearby, the Hermitage of the Grotto of Sant'Angelo from the 8th century is particularly interesting. Then there is the Grotta del Cavallone, rich in stalactites and stalagmites. This cave is located at 1450m high and the entrance is facilitated by a cablecar. Both for the complex of natural cavities and for the wild majesty of the scenery, D'Annunzio chose it to set the second act of "La Figlia di Jorio". From Palena you reach the Passo della Forchetta at an altitude of 1270 and through woods, meadows and pastures alternating grassy bottoms with earthen floors you get to Rivisondoli. Rivisondoli is located in a delightful panoramic position because it is perched on a spur of Mount Calvario, natural protection from the icy winds of the north-east, overlooking the plain of the Cinquemiglia, one of the most extensive highlands of Abruzzo; to the south there are wide prairies that in all seasons offer a panoramic view among the most beautiful of Abruzzo.
